New home building is a process that has pitfalls and ups and downs, like any other process.  If you are buying a new car, you look on the car complaints and review sites, you study which ones are rated for what you want: safety, longevity, economy.  And you buy the one that suits you.  Building a new home is no different.  And just like car models, home builders have different specialties.  Some are known for speed. Some for attention to detail. Some only do multi-family dwellings, and others specialize in multi-million-dollar homes. Just like with a car, you want to find the one that fits your needs and understands your end goals.

When you are looking into new home building, the first thing you want to know is which builder builds the kind of home you want.  No matter how good a builder is, if they specialize in the type of home that you don’t intend to live in, you likely won’t be happy with the outcome.  So, first do your research.  Which home builder is known for the quality and size and budget that you are looking for?  Which one is known within that market for being reliable? Which one keeps promises and keeps you in the loop?

Once you find that builder, you get to start talking.  Is it more important to you to have a home that looks exactly like you want or one that will still be here when your grandchildren inherit the house?  You need to think about these kinds of issues, because they dictate where the emphasis goes.  If you want to resell in three to five years, you have different goals than someone who plans to retire and live out their golden years there. Talk to your builder about what you want and what is important to you.
