If you are building a custom home, you have ideas. You know what you want and what you really don’t want. But you have some unknowns still.  Custom home trends might be useful to know to help you narrow down those unknowns.  You may know you want a family-style game room in the basement or a country kitchen and living space upstairs, but what if you don’t know what you want to do with the master bedroom? And how about those kitchen and bath counters? So many options! We’ll walk you through a few of the trends from 2018 that seem to be holding strong for 2019.

Custom Home Trends

Of all the custom home trends that aren’t going anywhere, cement seems to top the list.  Once we all realized that cement didn’t have to be just flooring, design took off. Cement is amazingly versatile and can be used to great effect in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, craft rooms, and many other places. Look for that to continue.

The sunroom made a comeback in 2016 and is still going strong. A great place for quiet and calm, sunrooms bring light into any home and often give a great view of a well-designed garden or yard.

Although the country kitchen hasn’t lost its appeal, dining rooms are also making a comeback. The overall trend is to get families together more, and both options work. People love to hang out in a kitchen and chat while they are fixing meals or cleaning up. But sit-down dinners are getting an emphasis they haven’t had in years, and dining rooms double as board game rooms, so plan for versatility.

Big pantries, big showers, big closets…all those trends are still holding, and outdoor living space hasn’t lost any ground either. The green trend is still strong, and since green building prices have come down, look for that to continue in custom home trends as well.
